How are the elements in the Universe formed?

What determines the structure of atomic nuclei?

How can precision experiments with ions reveal fundamental properties of matter?

These are the central questions driving our research. Our group, jointly based at the University of Cologne and GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, combines nuclear physics, atomic physics, and astrophysics in an interdisciplinary research program.

We perform precision experiments at heavy-ion storage rings, investigate polarized ion and molecular beams, and develop novel detector technologies to explore the properties of exotic nuclei and highly charged ions.

While pursuing a broad experimental and instrumentation program at the University of Cologne and GSI, we are also part of an extensive international collaboration network and carry out experiments at leading accelerator laboratories worldwide, including CERN (Switzerland), RIKEN (Japan), TRIUMF (Canada), the Institute of Modern Physics (China), and the High Intensity Heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF, China).
